Biodiesel customer case
Enhanced product quality and energy savings
Brazil's Biodiesel Boom
Brazil is one of the largest biodiesel producers in the world, experiencing a robust growth during the last decade. Soybean oil constitutes approximately 74% of all raw materials used for biodiesel production, followed by animal fat at 8%.
One of the major contributors to Brazil's biodiesel industry is Olfar Group. Olfar has been generating food and energy for over 35 years, including soybean processing, vegetable oil extraction, biodiesel production and glycerin refining. Their commitment to excellence in product and process innovation has positioned them as a leader in the industry.
Since 2010, Olfar has partnered with Novonesis to implement enzymatic solutions. Currently, they process 2,500 tons of soybeans per day and operate three biodiesel production plants with a total capacity of 3,850 tons per day (TPD). In their biodiesel production efforts, Olfar has conducted a series of industrial tests utilizing various technologies to process alternative raw materials, including animal fat (tallow) and used cooking oil. However, identifying a solution that fully addresses their specific needs has presented challenges.

Olfar’s key requirements:
- Process mixed feedstocks
- Achieve operational efficiency
- Minimize downtime
- Simplify sulfur specification
- Resolve issues with dark biodiesel color
Olfar Elevates Production with Eversa® Advance
The introduction of Novonesis' Eversa® Advance proved to be a game-changer, addressing Olfar's requirements for both quality and yield in their production processes.
Marcelo Pauletti, Head of Biodiesel at Olfar, said, “We experienced a significant improvement in quality because other processes did not meet 100% of the specifications we required for biodiesel production. We also achieved a significant reduction in our energy consumption by recovering methanol, which is no longer necessary in this new process, and (resulted in) having a better final product quality.”
Eversa® Advance is a biodiesel pretreatment solution that enables producers to process feedstocks such as used cooking oil, tallow and distillers’ corn oil(DCO). They are typically up to 20% in free fatty acids. Producers can expect lower operating costs, better product quality and higher plant throughput with Eversa® Advance.
