The hotspot for enzymatic solutions in the oils & fats industry
Novonesis Innovation Campus
In 2019, Novonesis opened its new Innovation Campus near Copenhagen, Denmark, hosting 800 employees with the ambition to create a global hub for biotechnology research.
The Innovation Campus builds on Novonesis’ world-leading expertise in enzymes and microbes, and provides the experts, technologies and equipment to help unlock business opportunities throughout a number of different industries, including oils & fats.
”Around the world, many oils & fats processors are shifting to enzyme-based processing technologies to improve efficiency and create high-value end-products for food, oleochemicals and renewable fuels,” says Christian Schmock, Global Head of Oil & Fats Processing at Novonesis. “The Innovation Campus brings together our customers, scientists, process engineers, and marketers to collaboratively innovate and enhance oils and fats processes.”

Discovering new enzymes
Today, Novonesis has a product portfolio with more than 10 enzymes for oils & fats processors, ranging from extraction and refining to transformation of vegetable oils into margarine, oleochemicals and biodiesel.
But it doesn’t stop there. Equipped with more than 97 laboratories, the Innovation Campus is an integral part of Novonesis’ global innovation network. There, Novonesis scientists and engineers are constantly working on new enzymes and products that can serve the various needs of the oils & fats industry. In the recent years, we have launched a phoshoplipase C for degumming of vegetable oil (Novonesis Quara® Boost), an immobilized lipase for production of oleochemicals (Novonesis Lipura® Flex) and also two liquid lipases for production of biodiesel. (Novonesis Eversa® Transform and Eversa® Advance).
“Innovation is in our DNA. We regularly engage with the oils & fats industry to understand how biosolutions can help customers optimize costs while allowing them to meet demands for health and environmental responsibility,” says Joanna Wawrzynczyk, Head of Oils & Fats Application Research Laboratory, at Novonesis.
Tailor-making solutions for each customer
The Innovation Campus also supports customers on a range of oils & fats applications throughout the stages of working with enzyme technology including feasibility, implementation and optimization.
“Adopting biosolutions in the oils & fats industry comes with a unique set of challenges and requires a holistic approach to processing and process design,” says Thomas Balle, Industry Technology Specialist.
"Most oils & fats producers are accustomed to the challenges of using traditional physical interventions and chemicals rather than modern biosolutions like enzymes. With the dedicated resources we have here at Novonesis, we can help develop and support our customers in their journey towards implementing enzymatic solutions and provide insights into the latest innovations in the field.
For instance, analyzing the phospholipid composition of crude vegetable oils using 31P-NMR and ICP will help to determine the potential yield gain from enzymatic degumming and through high-throughput proof-of-concept demonstrations show how enzymes are able to reduce free fatty acid concentrations or to fully convert a broad mix of waste-based customer feedstocks into FAME biodiesel.”

Globally, more than 100 plants are transforming their oil processes with Novonesis solutions.
Whether you operate a plant for degumming, interesterification, biodiesel or oleochemicals, you can tap into our global network of experts and innovation facilities to receive market insights, operational support, and technical expertise.
